I’ve always been a fan of sprite-based RPGs. So, to be honest, 3 Stars of Destiny had a biased advantage over most other games from the start – and, luckily, what I ended up playing didn’t fall too short of my expectations.

3 Stars of Destiny is typical of its brand. You wander around in the field with a sword-bearing protagonist, build up a party and slay monsters in turn-based combat. If you’ve played an RPG before you’ll know what needs to be done. Fortunately for 3 Stars of Destiny, though, there are a couple of innovations that help it stand out from the pack.

First is a quest system. Sure, you can follow through the standard plot – which involves ’3 stars’, one of whom is the protagonist, and an evil god looking to suck the life out of them – but at the same time there are extra quests. Most of them involve collecting items and taking them to an NPC for processing into a reward that will help ease the burdens of your journey.

And boy, are there a lot of items in 3 Stars of Destiny. Every map is packed with stuff to pick up. Acorns, eggs, nuts, slime, berries… you name it, you can probably pick it up. More, you can SEE most of the items on-screen. It’s not just a matter of walking up to random backdrop scenery and clicking a button. There’s a lot to look at, which is a nice change from other RPGs with sparse maps.

What I REALLY liked is that the world is filled with life. As you walk through the forest you’ll see frogs hopping around, birds in the trees, squirrels chasing each other… the diversity of creatures invigorates 3 Stars of Destiny where other sprite-based games fail. And though the graphics are nothing special – think any SNES game and you’ll get the idea – every little detail helps.

Unfortunately I was less enamoured by the soundtrack. Though there are occasional melodies to groove along with (I especially like the boss tune), your characters usually plod along to absolute silence. The proper musical accompaniment can really make an RPG shine, and 3 Stars of Destiny does nothing to capitalize on this principle. Worse, the standard battle theme sounds grainy and synthetic, which is especially bad considering you’re going to hear it a lot.

Well, maybe, anyway. It depends on your initial choices. 3 Stars of Destiny is unique in that you choose how often you’ll get into battles. They may be sparse, they may be regular, they may come every couple steps. I hear people complain about too many or not enough battles in RPGs all too often, and so this option is quite accommodating. Toss in three difficulty levels and you’ve got a good combination.

In the end, 3 Stars of Destiny is nothing we’ve never seen before. That said, what it does it does quite well, and coupled with a suitably engaging story and interesting characters the package as a whole is probably worth getting. I’d buy it. 3.5/5
