“And Yet It Moves.” An interesting title and an interesting idea. Is it also an interesting game? The idea is simple enough: Move your “ghost” from checkpoint to checkpoint in almost standard side-scrolling manner. Every game must have a hook, and in this case, it is the ability to flip the world around, creating a new perspective, and more importantly, new direction of gravity. The story is even simpler: There isn’t one.

GAMEPLAY

There are only six things players can do in this game, and that’s being generous. Using the keyboard, or a connected game controller, players can control a “ghost,” having him walk left, walk right, and jump. In addition, players can rotate the world clockwise or counterclockwise ninety degrees, or flip the world completely. (Or a one-hundred eighty degree rotation.) Using these six controls, players must navigate the ghost toward other ghosts, who serve as checkpoints. At the end of each level, players need to move into a dark square doorway, which leads to the next level. The only dangers are falling too far, and falling boulders. Too much velocity from either of these, and the ghost falls to pieces. It is a simple game, though simplicity is not always bad. Unfortunately, in this case, the simplicity IS bad. The most important aspect of a game is fun. The only thing to break up the monotony is the occasional frustration.

GRAPHICS

In a world dominated by Xbox360 and Playstation 3, the lesser powers need to replace realistic and “good” graphics with innovation. “Mad World” on the Wii proved that a stylish game can trump quality graphics. “And Yet It Moves” used this lesson, giving players a clever visual melody. Characters, objects, and menu screens all look hand-drawn. The problem with the graphics, is that some areas are insanely dark. The whole game is supposed to have a dark feel, but it is ridiculous to have a character, and objects that cannot be seen. (See frustration)

AUDIO

Less is more. Or maybe, less is less. The decision to play, “And Yet It Moves” with the sound off does not change the experience. There are few sound effects. The ones that do exist, while not bad, are nothing worth discussing.

CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION

The idea of changing aspects in order to navigate a maze/series of platforms is nothing new. (See “Crush” for the PSP.) However, it is not an overused utility. This exact idea has never been done before. For that, “And Yet It Moves” deserves praise. Throw in the stylish graphics, and players get a rather unique game.

OVERALL

“And Yet It Moves” is not a horrible game by any stretch of the imagination. Players who really love platforming puzzlers could easily find plenty to like about this game. Unfortunately, the overall lack of substance make this a demo game, and not a buyer. “And Yet It Moves” gets 3/5.
