What would the world be like if Eve had never taken a bite from that forbidden fruit? How would our reality be different? We would never grow old; our every need would be magically met. How long would it take humans to destroy this perfect place? Eternal Eden from Blossomsoft is a Role Playing Game placed in this surreal setting and as Noah and his friends find out, it doesn’t take much for things to start going downhill.

First and most importantly, Eternal Eden is a solid turn- based RPG that does everything it should. The player is presented with a tutorial that explains the game as you play it and how to utilize the menu options, which will all be very familiar to anyone who has played earlier RPG’s such as Final Fantasy series. Controls are responsive and accurate; the game is smooth and well mapped and has a very polished and finished feel. It is easy to learn, easy to play and the difficulty level of the creatures you encounter progresses accordingly, as does your skills and weaponry. In short, the gameplay follows the successful model that has already been laid down by the RPG’s before it, allowing the player to focus more on the unfolding story and not on trying to figure out how to maneuver Noah or access items.

At first glance, Eternal Eden looks dated. The graphics are more what I am accustomed to seeing on portable systems, but this is not to say the graphics are bad, just different. The graphics are presented perfectly in their own right and reminded me of one of my all-time favorite games, Earthbound. The world and characters have the rounded, whimsical look of a classic RPG, complete with friendly neighbors who never lock their doors and shops that are always in stock. Although it may not compare to the titles on PC or next-gen consoles, Eternal Eden is crisp, colorful and well done. It is an inviting place to explore and quickly makes RPG gamers like myself feel right at home. The music and sound effects are presented in a midi format that may not compare to today’s standards, but smoothly fit into this genre and complement it well.

Although Eternal Eden chose caution over innovation in the logistics department, much more creativity was allowed in the story. Yes, you have to save the Princess but there is a broader story here loosely based on the Biblical story of the Garden of Eden. It achieves in producing a unique storyline without promoting or disproving any religion and avoids the possibility of offending even the most sensitive gamers. Gamers of all skill levels will enjoy Eternal Eden. I greatly enjoyed it and plan on buying the full version to see how the story plays out and to enjoy a classic RPG. Good Job Blossomsoft, proving it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to produce a quality game.
