There’s been a renaissance in adventure games, thanks to the rise of independent game developers and free, powerful tools like Adventure Game Studio. Ben Ward and Dan Marshall made their adventure game debut in Ben There, Dan That! and have returned for their first commercial title: Time Gentlemen, Please! If you think a game made with a freeware engine isn’t worth buying, think again. Time Gentlemen, Please! is a painstakingly crafted adventure in the tradition of classic 90′s LucasArts adventure games. And on top of that, it’s hilarious.

Gameplay

TGP begins after BTDT ends, with Ben and Dan trying to get back home from the future. The interactions in TGP are basic (walk, examine, use, ask Dan), but encourage exploring and experimenting. Dan even says so himself, explaining, “This isn’t a timed demo.” None of the puzzles are especially difficult, and deliberately trying inane commands is half the fun of TGP. This world is made for exploring, with absolutely no filler.

Graphics

TGP is a world of pixelated lines, sharp angles and stick figures. Don’t expect gorgeous illustrations outside the nifty opening montage, but this clumsily-drawn world is strangely immersive thanks to the staggering level of detail (including the Millennium Wheel in the London skyline).

Sound

The sound effects aren’t spectacular, but fit well with all the zaniness. Nakhman and Swith wrote an excellent soundtrack to TGP, and while the three demo tunes don’t quite gel together well enough, they individually set the mood very well.

Innovation and Creativity

Creativity is where TGP shines. TGP is a shameless rip-off of LucasArts adventure games from the 90′s. But what it lacks in innovation, it makes up for in sheer chutzpah. This is one of the funniest adventure games ever made. Every scene is a smorgasbord of jokes just waiting to be told. Not only does TGP break the fourth wall, it reaches through it to gesture rudely at other games. There’s even an adjustable Racism bar in the options menu (which doesn’t appear to do anything, but it’s the thought that counts). And best of all, the full version promises parodies of text adventures and early adventure games – including one with a heavily-pixelated Adolf Hitler. If you like South Park, you’ll love this game even if you’re not British.

Is it worth $5? How could it not be? Time Gentlemen, Please! is a superb retro misadventure, packed wall-to-wall with sarcastic British humour. More than just a great adventure game, it’s a modern classic.

Buy this game if…

- You like adventure games
- You’re mature enough for dry, referential British wit
- You’re immature enough to enjoy lots of dirty jokes

Do NOT buy this game if

- You’re turned off by blocky graphics
- You need more action in your gaming
- South Park as written by two guys from London does not sound humorous to you

Time Gentlemen, Please! gets 5 out of 5.
