Big Brain Wolf by Frima Studo Inc. is the story of a vegetarian, genie wolf who’s mother has been accused of eating little red riding hood’s grandmother. To save her, he must meander through various fairy tale settings, solving puzzles. There is also an area to ‘train your brain’ which has no storyline and contains 6 brain-boosting games.

Game Play

Big Brain Wolf plays like a cartoon escape game. There are usually one or two puzzles per area to solve. You must click random items in a given area to uncover puzzles which range in style and difficulty. Every item clicked initiates a bit of cute, clever dialogue. About half of the puzzles are challenging (a couple were even delicious), the other half seemed to have been borrowed from a child’s diner placemat. I initially thought this made the game schizophrenic until I read another reviewer’s cursory mention that Big Brain Wolf might be played with a child. I think this game is ideal for that. There is just enough sophistication to keep an adult engaged and enough simple fun to keep a child happy. If this is your intention, it is likely well worth the price of $19.99.

Creativity and Innovation

Most of the puzzles will be familiar to anybody who enjoys puzzles A three piece version of the tower of Hanoi puzzle makes an appearance. There were a scant few puzzles I had never seen before. The story line and dialogue are where the real creativity went in this game. While there is nothing new about fairy tale satire, there are ingenious twists. The Baa Baa Black Sheep are a take on the black panthers, replete with wooly afros. My favorite was the cricket from the fable about the ant and the cricket. Having learned his lesson about working through the summer, he tries to earn money from the ant by performing as a street musician.

Graphics and Sound

The music is a jazzy piece that sounds like a standing bass guitar. While it doesn’t switch up much, there are long interludes with no music for a break. The graphics are cartoonish in a Hanna-Barbera way, sparse with even less detail in the background graphics. They are serviceable. Most characters are assigned one or two movements, looped indefinitely. The wolf walks and has endearing facial expressions. There is hardly more movement than that.
