With so many puzzle games out there, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find ones that are innovative while retaining the “simple to learn, hard to master,” quality its predecessors have perfected. With Arcade Lines, developer Lobstersoft attempt to pull of both, but unfortunately, the end result falls disappointingly short of “impressive.”

The concept is all too familiar: you have a grid in front of you, and must move colored gems around the grid in order to form rows of five of the same color. The gems may be moved anywhere on the grid, so long as there is an open path from where it starts to where it is going, however it is not quite as simple as it sounds; if you fail to make a match with a move, more gems are added to the grid. There are multi-colored and wild gems, which make creating matches easier, and special gems like dynamite and a paint bucket, which can be used to get you out of some potentially sticky situations.

While it makes for an entertaining puzzle game, it’s nothing that gamers haven’t seen before. The game plays like any basic point-and-click puzzle title, and doesn’t offer much innovation past that. Basically, when it comes down to it, this game seems like a title that was thrown together in an afternoon, and the lackluster graphics and single looping track that may as well have been ripped from a eighties demo tape don’t help its situation much.

While this certainly not the “diamond in the rough,” puzzle fans are constantly on the lookout for, it does have some redeeming qualities. There are multiple difficulties to play on, as well different modes to play, including the ever frustrating time attack mode. For players who buy the full game within a week after downloading the trial, two new skins for the game are unlocked. In addition, the game can get incredibly challenging, and players are rewarded with score multipliers for getting multiple matches in a row, so people who like games that force you to think two steps ahead will probably get the most mileage out of it.

When it comes down to it, though, Arcade Lines is simply a case of too little, too late. It is entertaining and offers gamers a challenge.

You should buy Arcade Lines if:

- You crave challenge.
- You consider yourself a puzzle gamer and have exhausted all of your free options.
- You’re impartial as to whether or not you have fun.

You should not buy Arcade Lines if:

- You prefer the games you play to have any degree of depth.
- You’re looking for an innovative puzzle game.
- You prefer not to spend money on something you can get for free.
