Westward IV takes a little bit from some of today’s most popular games, and puts it all together in an original adventure. Gamers will recognize elements of The Sims, Sim City, Animal Crossing, and even Warcraft. All of this fits into a Wild West story of a brother and sister who need to rebuild their home town.
GAME PLAY
To start, players choose between Henry and Annie, brother and sister, to control during the first area. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter, as both characters are controlled after the first five minutes or so. All the moves are performed by right and left clicking, as well as clicking and dragging. A few options must be selected from a menu in order to be performed.
No matter what the overarching quest, each task is sparked by talking to any number of townsfolk, and be told what must be done. Then, it’s off to gather food, chop wood, dig for gold, etc. The tasks are on par with those of Animal Crossing, but look more like Warcraft harvesting.
In time, the Sim portion of the game comes into play, as players can build and repair buildings to improve the town. Still, with everything being at the behest of someone else, there is no real feel of a “town-building” experience.
While the game play is simple and easy to understand, it also gets tedious rather quickly. The tasks sound different when they are assigned, but in the end, players click and drag, and watch the characters get to work.

GRAPHICS
The theme is “Wild West” so it should be forgivable that everything has the same brown and desolate look. The townsfolk are unremarkable, and anything but unique. Both Henry and Annie are Wild West cliches. Still, there’s something endearing about the look of Westward IV
AUDIO
Neither music nor sound effects are necessary to enjoy this game. Both seem to be taken from an audio bank, and just plugged in.
OVERALL
Westward IV is an average game that is most memorable for the funny quips offered during loading screens, such as, “Cowpoke is a noun, not an adjective,” and “Pirates and Ninjas agree, cowboys rule.” Unfortunately, people don’t buy games for humor. Still, Westward IV gets a 3/5.
