The cracked editorial team at HarryBalls.com recently noticed the proliferation of Zombies in many downloadable video games. We find this Zombie games trend perplexing, alarming and slightly disturbing so we thought should investigate the matter. Why are zombies popping up in downloadable video games, what’s or who is behind this? Should “regular” game characters be fearful for their jobs? Do Zombies work in video games for lower salaries? WTF?

Instead of guessing the answers to these questions and a few more we invited four zombies to a roundtable discussion some would call an interrogation. Joining us today are:
Zulie (Zombie name for Julie)
Zom (Zombie name for Tom)
Zack (Zombie name and regular human name for Zack are conveniently the same)
Zhloe (Zombie name for Chloe)
These Zombies will discuss their Zombie thoughts on following four Zombie video games:
1. Plants Vs Zombies from Popcap
2. Atom Zombie Smasher by Blendo Games
3. Dead Meets Lead from Keldyn Interactive
4. Bunny the Zombie Slayer by Hot Head Games
HB: Why are Zombie’s popping up in so many downloadable games?
Zulie: Well Harry or do you prefer Mr Balls? We (Zombies) have to thank Mr. George Romero for introducing Zombies to the media world and since 1968 Zombies have conquered many media – film, TV, MTV, radio, books and even Skymall. It was only matter to time before we penetrated the video game market. Zombies offer game developers cross platform flexibility, mass market appeal and body malleability. Zombies port easily to the iOS, PC, MAC, XBLA, PSN blah blah blah without a lot of heavy lifting on the back end and require much much less QA resources, kind of like the Unity 3D development tools. We migrate easily from a 2D to 3D to HD environment without requiring extra RAM. Although we aren’t sure how an HD environment enhances game play. I mean come on, are consumers dumb enough to think that an HD game will entertain them more than a 2D Zombie Defense Game? It’s the plot, the strategy and the challenge for Christs sake!
Zom: What she said.
Zhloe: As you can tell the male zombie communicates as well as the male human: a couple of grunts and then he rolls over and goes to sleep. Continuing on what my female colleague Zulie explained, after the first internet bubble burst the Zombie community realized that Zombies had to get smart and Zombies had to get organized. We formed the International Brotherhood of Zombies and hired a very well-known Hollywood talent agency to make sure Zombies play an integral part in the plot of every video game produced globally. (HarryBalls.com representatives contacted both William Morris and CAA who both refused to confirm or disavow this point). Obviously Zombies don’t expect to star in every video game on every gaming platform but we figured it couldn’t hurt to keep asking. Ya know .. persistence works, even for Zombies. In addition to Zombie video games you will see Zombies in Webisodes, music videos, Tweets, email and IMs. Now I will hand the interview reins back over to Zulie, who will speak on Zombies behalf for the remaining of parts of this so called interview.
HB: Wow. That’s quite a response. Let’s discuss the downloadable games mentioned earlier. Plants Vs Zombies, Atom Zombie Smasher, Dead Meets Lead and Bunny The Zombie Slayer. In Plants vs Zombies Zombies battle plants. Consumer can buy Plants Vs Zombies for many platforms: PC, XBLA, MAC, Web, DS, PSN, and iOS. What are your thoughts on this downloadable video game from Popcap?
Zulie: Ah! First of all Zombies refer to this game as Zombies vs Plants.
HB: Ok. Can you get to your point already about Plants Vs Zombies?
Zulie: What part of “Zombies vs Plants” I repeat “Zombies Vs Plants” don’t you understand?
HB: Got it.
Zulie: Male Humans are even more dense than Male Zombies. I suppose you don’t ask for directions either. Anywho.. when John Vechey, one of Popcap’s founders, and his team approached us about the Zombies Vs Plants game concept, we laughed. Zombies battling plants? Hello, haven’t you heard of organic weed killer?
HB: Okay. Someone’s a little sensitive and maybe even a little insecure. So what happened?
Zulie: According to seriously unconfirmed rumors, significant funds originating from a Seattle bank appeared in the International Brotherhood of Zombie’s Retirement fund so we suddenly decided to cooperate.
HB: Let’s move past Zombies vs Plants and discuss Atom Zombie Smasher by Blendo Games.
Atom Zombie Smasher Screenshot
Zulie: Yes. We are very familiar with Atom Zombie Smasher from Blendo Games and love it with one small exception which we will get to after a few words. Atom Zombie Smasher takes place in the 1960s and the Zombies battle nukes and the military. Much more of a welcome challenge for Zombies like us. Consumers can download Atom Zombie Smasher to their PC, Mac and Linux machines for $15.00. However our one complaint or suggested enhancement would be to change the fucking color of Zombies from pink! Blendo Games colored Zombies battling tanks in pink! This isn’t the Breast Cancer Marathon (which we support by the way), this is war.
HB: Let’s discuss Dead Meets Lead, a downloadable zombie themed game released by Keldyn Interactive. In our opinion, Dead Meets Lead would win the best video game name award if it existed.
Dead Meets Lead Screenshot
Zulie: Yes we love the Dead Meets Lead name also. We (Zombies) enjoyed every element of the making of this game except…
HB: Let me guess, one exception.
Zulie: If you would let me finish my sentence. Actually Zombies took exception to three elements of Dead Meets Lead. You see Dead Meets Lead takes place in the 17th century Caribbean islands. First of all, yet another period piece (We love them!) with the 17th century appropriate costumes but did Keldyn Interactive have to produce the game on site on one of the actual Caribbean islands. Zombies have to deal with a pissed off marooned 17th century British Naval captain AND malaria, humidity and f..ing mosquitoes which one would need to give the game an authentic 17th century Caribbean island feel but haven’t you heard of the green screen!!! Dead Meets Lead sells for $19.99.
HB: Finally we get to the recently released iOS/IPhone game from HotHead Games called Bunny the Zombie Slayer. In this game Bunnies must protect and defend the homestead from Zombies who are after one thing. Brains? No. Chocolate? No. Eggs. YES! Zulie, what do Zombies think of Bunny the Zombie Slayer.
Bunny The Zombie Slayer Screenshot
Zulie: Bunny the Zombie Slayer? Are you for real? What do you think Zombies think of a game where a cute little Bunny must fight Zombies. If Zombies comment on the Bunny the Zombie slayer game for the Iphone, Ipad and IPod Touch for $.99 then your readers may think Zombies actually endorse it. We will not legitimize this concept. What’s next? Zombies vs worms? How about turtles? Do I hear Zombies vs cockroaches or amoebas? Come on. Get Real.
HB: Zulie, Zom, Zack, and Zhloe. Thank you very much for sharing your time and thoughts. Hopefully our readers appreciate how verbose you all were with us. Specifically Zom and Zack were tremendous.
