Tim Fishlock and Giles Hammond created and released Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon, a visually stunning platform adventure game for the IPhone, IPod Touch and the IPad requiring iOS 3.2 or later for $0.99. You help guide Sir Benfro as he travel the world using his “Brilliant” balloon for transportation as he discovers new lands and creatures. You must gently touch the screen to power the balloons ascent into the air making sure to guide the balloon into fireflies who provide the power. Removing your finger from the screen causes the balloon to descend. Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon is definitely one of the more unique games our fingers have played with in while.
Here’s the description of Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon from the creators:
“Travel with inquisitive explorer Sir Benfro as he flies through fantastical new worlds filled with weird and wonderful creatures. Float into forests, across oceans and down to the centre of the Earth. But take care – you’re never far from bumping into the next bizarre beast.
Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon features four adventures. Magical fireflies named Light Emitting Daves power Sir Benfro’s balloon. You must fly as fast as you can to keep collecting the Daves and reach the end of each adventure. It’s a game for all ages with three difficulty settings to delight everyone from beginners to master balloonists.
Drawing inspiration from Victorian botanical illustration, puppet theatres, Terry Gilliam’s animations for Monty Python, the stylings of Studio Ghibli and Yimou Zhang’s film Hero, Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon doesn’t look like any other game on the App Store.
Book publishers Thames & Hudson were so enamoured on seeing the art style of the game that they got right on board and will be publishing a picture book called Sir Benfro’s Travels in autumn 2012.
So who is Sir Benfro? He’s the curious little fellow with humongous hair. Naturalist, scientist and explorer, Sir Benfro has made some of the most important discoveries of his generation. Without him we would have no idea that instead of laying eggs, the female Stingomp knits her offspring from the laces of old pairs of sneakers.
Take a closer look at the creatures you’ve seen on your travels in the Spotter’s Guide, to discover fascinating facts such as that the moustache of the Brackle McSturdy not only grows in the conventional manner, outward and downward, but it also sprouts inward so that over time the Brackle’s head is stuffed like a pillowcase.
Sir Benfro’s Brilliant Balloon has been created by Tim Fishlock and Giles Hammond. Artist and designer Fishlock created the original art style of the game while Hammond moved from a lead role on big budget PS3 titles and brought the whole thing to life. The unique challenges this project presented resulted in both men becoming proficient in a host of new skills including needlepoint, decoupage and flintknapping.”
