There is Dr. Hugo’s Factory for making cute little mechanical companions of all sorts. Plus it is packed with plenty of humor. You will get to control five robots as they search the factory for clues as to how to open a mysterious metal box found. There are flamethrowers with deviously clever puzzles.Creativity with innovation exudes from this game. The sounds are so pleasing to your ears and nothing about them is annoying. Once or twice while I was playing the sound skipped. It is not very obvious and can be dismissed.

This video game will keep you on your toes and in amazement over the little mechanical companions. There is a goofy cast of characters, which are both robotic and human. Splashed in the game are hilarious nerd references with a silly dialog that actually makes it endearing.

Each robot has something to bring to the table. Knowing which one to use and what is needed will make you a pro at moving ahead. The puzzles are not that difficult however, they are most challenging. Close attention must be paid to your surroundings in order to know what you have at your disposal and what you will need to proceed. Clues and hints are given to keep you heading in the proper direction. They are subtle and you need to be aware. Excellent game but you can have frantic moments.

Overall on visual, audio and plots the rating for this video game is a 4.5 out of 5 in all categories. When they say great things come in small packages Puzzle Bots is it. Massive charm is delivered in a cartoon style delightful. A few technical problems do occur but can easily be ignored. At times the music can skip and puzzles can be blurred but do clear up. They are not very obvious and easily can be dismissed as the game is extremely entertaining. You may not even notice it. When I played this game I paid close attention to every aspect.

Story

The game takes place in the fantasy kingdom of Dalriada, a land teeming with Gnomes, Fairies, and Brownies. Players take the role of Kindle Elderwood: local Gnomish watchman. When his beloved home is besieged by goblins, Kindle leaves his beloved “Gnomestead” with his trusty white owl Wick on a journey to liberate the nearby villages and set things right in the land. So basically, it is your standard Tolkienesque fantasy tale, yet told with a slight hint of humor to take some of the edge off. While the story is charming, the writing seems a bit on the sparse side, with NPC dialogue coming off as little more than filler than anything truly remarkable.

Gameplay

The gameplay is your basic 2D sidescrolling fare. Run and jump through the levels, whacking at Goblins with your staff. Occasionally, you’re called upon to light fireplaces in villagers’ homes, which has its own sort of “fetch quest” vibe to it. The fighting is a mix of melee combat with RPG elements thrown in for good measure. Although the fighting can be fun, some of the levels can be rather confusing in their design. Often times, players are only given a vague objective with little indication of where to go or how to get there. This is made more complicated by the games spotty controls, which often have you running when you’re only mean to walk.

Graphics

The in-game visual style is impressive. Characters definitely have a surreal fairy tale quality to them, giving them a truly inspired look. The world itself is definitely a treat to behold, taking medieval fantasy and taking it back to much more charming look. Meanwhile, power-up and combat effects are visually stunning, lighting up the screen with explosions and sparkling effects. The image of cartoon goblins being lit a flame is definitely entertaining in its own right.

While the game is a gem to look at and entertaining for a while, it is not the most polished experienced. The tragedy is that it seems that there was a lot of potential here. Sadly, Emberwinds is not a truly realized experience. This is definitely a game that could have used some more development time.

Story

Game Play

You play the role of Anka. You have certain tasks to complete before the real quest begins. These tasks include a hidden object game, finding 40 eggs which are hidden inside and outside the house, making a pie, tidying up and helping Dad in the garden. Each game has extra mini puzzles for example, before helping to bake; you have to find the ingredients in a word search. This becomes the background to the story before Mom and Dad disappear. There are plenty of hints so that the game can be as easy as difficult as you want.

Graphics

The graphics are bold 2D animations which will appeal to children. They are clear and colorful. The hidden objects are well concealed without being impossible to find.

Sound

The characters speak out the instructions on the screen making it appeal to younger players who may not enjoy wordy instructions. It also makes the game more interesting as there are different voices for each character. There are realistic sound effects for each activity the player is undertaking such as a scrubbing sound for washing the dishes or a banging sound for opening and closing the door.

Creativity and Innovation

This game is a very creative game for younger players. It offers a mixture of game playing skills to develop. There are hidden objects to find and instructions to follow but also the mini games such as word searches and jigsaws within the quest add something extra to an ordinary adventure game. The game is value for money and one I would consider buying it because you can have hours of fun on it. It is family game as you have the opportunity to use the hints and skip the mini puzzles.

You should buy Anka if:

*You enjoy character interaction and quests.
*You want a family game.
* You enjoy searching for hidden objects.

You should not buy Anka if:

*You prefer quick fire games with rapid results.
* You are an experienced game player as you might find the initial pace too slow.

WildHollow, by Karjasoft is a new take on empire building. The story is a mix of bizarre and contrived, but the dialogue indicates that the game’s creators are fully aware of this. The game is littered with tongue in cheek humor. The idea is that the hero returns to his or her home town to find that the family farm has been destroyed, and that mom and dad are no where to be found. This hero needs to simultaneously rebuild the farm to its former glory, and find and possibly rescue the parents.

GAMEPLAY
For the most part, Wild Hollow is a point and click game. There is a world map, with plenty of locations, and plenty more which can be unlocked. Within each of these locations, there is a still frame of the town, farm, orchard, or whatever the location is. At these locations, there are people and buildings to click on, each of which starts up a conversation. The player is given plenty of options for what to say or ask the people of the towns. Through these conversations, the hero is given quests to undertake, each of which is rewarded with money or items. There are a few other things that can be done at each of these locations. Items are sometimes hidden in the scenery. Some of these are quest items. Others are statues which the hero keeps as part of the collection. Lastly, there are a few mini-games which can be played at some of these locations. These are incredibly simple, and a bit stupid, but at least they are a change of pace from the monotony of point and click.

All of these actions ultimately lead to the acquisition of money. This money can be used to buy things, but most importantly, to help rebuild the family farm. Once the first repairs have been made, the hero can start to keep animals, feed them, raise them, and sell them.

GRAPHICS
While most graphics in Wild Hollow are still images, they do have a polished look. The design for the characters are very creative, albeit a tad on the intentionally cheesy side.

AUDIO
The music changes by location, and while the sound designers tried to put a bit of a modern twist on it, the game still sounds like every other medieval game.

CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION
Wild Hollow tried a few new things, and to some degree they worked. But all in all, this was a pretty unoriginal game.

THREE REASONS TO BUY
-The game is loaded with humor.
-The character designs are quite colorful.
-There are plenty of things to do.

THREE REASONS NOT TO BUY
-$19.99 is a bit much for a point and click game.
-The game is mostly devoid of action.

Mean Girls: High School Showdown is a marketing tie-in for Mean Girls, a movie about female bullying in high school. And boy, someone must have been desperate for a marketing tie-in to have greenlighted this train wreck! It dresses up as an adventure-RPG, but the core mechanic is a tired tile-matching puzzle you’ve seen 100 times. You’ll start off picking one of 4 ‘cool-ish outcast’ stereotypes – ‘artsy’ girl in a beret and paint-splashed jumper, indie nerd with catseye glasses and buttons adorning her coveralls, skankalicious rocker bad-girl in ripped jeans and spiked bracelets (my choice), or some proto-emo-thing with a frosted fringe and a powder-blue suit. Then you get to tinker with your skills and attributes, though it’s easier just to choose ‘mean’ or ‘nice’. Recapitulate the plot of the movie as you run around in an effort to infiltrate the various high-school cliques, including the bullying ‘plastics’; this involves a whole lot of ‘showdowns’ with various nerds, preps, jocks, and other colorless cardboard cutouts of high-school life.

During a showdown, your goals are twofold: either line up hearts to fill your opponent’s ‘loyalty’ meter, or whip icons, which drain away their ‘stamina’ meter (presumably by smacking them around). The method you choose gives you a reputation, as either a ‘devil’ or an ‘angel’, but it makes little difference to play. Getting other shapes fills your ‘nice’, ‘smart’, ‘prank’, and ‘cruel’ meter to access special skills you unlock as you gain levels – but ultimately, what’s the point? It’s a bloody tile matching game! The music is repetetive and boring, aside from the title screen’s rockin’ indie ballad lifted from the movie soundtrack, and your opponent’s occasional cries of pain when struck are slightly amusing but get old fast. Oh, and while we’re on the title screen, it’s a vile mess that makes it difficult to know where to click. The character portraits for the various students are actually well done, clean line drawings that contain more genuine character than any of the trite dialogue or plot; some artist obviously put a lot of (wasted) effort into them. You get the feeling that the writers don’t really remember what high school was like, but are relying on some marketing-research report for their dialogue.

Every element of this game has a tied-on feel, as if the designers were on a deadline to create this franchise title before they got to work on something they actually had some form of enthusiasm for, so they just reached for a bunch of standardized gameplay modules and stuck them together. Personally I would have liked to see a game that actually put some thought into portraying cliques and bullying with the same intensity as the Mean Girls movie. Instead we get a mish-mash of a dog’s breakfast of a hack tile-matching game that will appeal to no-one. I have no desire whatsoever to buy this game; just watch the movie instead, it’s actually somewhat entertaining.
