I’ll freely admit that, as I write this review, I’m craving chocolate. Watching tiny animals munching down on vast bars of the stuff is just too mouth watering to resist.

Chocolate Castle is about as light hearted as the name implies. The game is quite simple: you’re given control of small, gridded levels filled with big bars of chocolate and populated by several tiny (yet incredibly ravenous) animals which match each of the four chocolate colors. Your goal is to clear each level of its chocolate by directing the animals into the candy treat, watching as they wolf down every last connected square of it.

And that’s where the challenge comes in. The animal will only eat as much chocolate is connected together in a given bundle before disappearing forever, so if you have any unconnected chocolate of that color you won’t be able to get rid of it. The task is to manoeuvre the pieces together to create a massive chain that the proper animal can feast upon, which is much harder than you might think. Chocolate also doesn’t disconnect once it’s connected, so you need to be especially careful about your moves. (Luckily undoing poor moves is really easy, unlike other, more unforgiving puzzlers.)

There are a few other obstacles – walls, snakes, that sort of thing – but your goal always remains the same, and at first glance seems straightforward. It never remains as such, though, as the chocolate configurations get ever more ingenious and frustrating. There are some really clever puzzles in this game, and with varying difficulty levels and hundreds of the things to complete you’ll be kept busy for a long, long time.

I think what draws me to Chocolate Castle most is its aesthetic qualities. It has the appearance of a nicely polished SNES game, complete with pixelated environments and a small MIDI soundtrack that brings back some fond memories. (That said I would’ve liked music during the puzzles, though once you get into the groove you won’t notice the lack of sound anyway.) The little animals are especially endearing: they don’t do much, but they possess an adorable allure that’s tough to ignore, and if you put one beside their desired chocolate without letting them chow down they’ll peer over at it longingly. Priceless.

There’s little to dislike about Chocolate Castle. It’s an excellent puzzler that doesn’t burden players with unnecessary flare, and even rewards you after each successful puzzle with an upward shower of balloons. Few games will make you feel so genuinely good about succeeding. 4/5

You should buy this game if:

- You value cuteness
- You have plenty of time on your hands
- You enjoy puzzles

You should NOT buy this game if:

- You desire an expansive soundtrack
- You lack patience
- You wish to maintain a low calorie diet (trust me, you’ll want chocolate after playing)
