Downloadable games come in all shape and sizes. Pirate games are increasing in popularity. Seek and find games are already very popular, at least from the developer standpoint. So why not combine the two? Check and check. Jolly Rover, a downloadable game available for PC and Mac, is the perfect mix of pirate story, with the the point and click style of a seek and find game.
GAME PLAY
Players take on the role of a humanoid dog named James Rover. He is an aspiring pirate, who must first escape capture, and then work his way to the top. He does this by interacting with other pirates, finding items throughout the pirate ship, and using them in the right situation. Every time Rover does something, it helps to advance the plot. As certain things are found and/or done, “Loot” can be unlocked, and viewed from the main menu screen. Jolly Rover is a moderately interesting game, but most game fans are going to be disappointed by the lack of action. Only those who can really get into the plot will truly enjoy it.
GRAPHICS
For the most part, the look of Jolly Rover is standard for downloadable games. There are simple colors, designs, and shades, which should all make for a smooth looking game. Unfortunately, on some graphics cards, moveable objects flash in and out of view, which not only makes the game tough to look at, but can sort of give away some of the fun, such as a hole hidden behind a poster.
AUDIO
The game sounds good, and the voice acting is acceptable, but the hero’s voice can get a bit annoying after awhile. He has a prissy British accent which clashes with the cliche pirate voices of all the other characters.

CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION
Really, this type of game has been before, and many times. King’s Quest, Space Quest, and the like, all better, larger scale games that stimulate the same part of a gamer’s mind. This is one of the first pirate adventures of this type, but that’s the extent of it.
OVERALL
Jolly Rover, if not technically flawed, would be a very average game. With its flaws, it can only earn a 2/5.

Darkwind Media Released Blocks: The Devilish Delivery Game in beta
Darkwind Media released the beta demo of a downloadable physics platform game called Blocks. The game player has to deliver blocks on a delivery platform using left and right thrusters. However the game player can’t use the thrusters at the same time so success comes from balancing the force of the thrusters in the direction of the target without toppling the block in the wrong direction. Its an interesting downloadable game offered only as a demo now for both the PC and the MAC.

“Alien Domination” is much like the old arcade game “Tail Gunner”. In “Alien Domination” the player is a turret gunner aboard a deep space exploration ship. While looking for minerals the ship runs into an alien invasion fleet planning to attack the earth. The player’s job is to wipe out the attacking enemy ships so they can make it back to Earth.
The action is fast and furious as the player must destroy hundreds of enemy fighters, attack drones and even a couple of vast enemy space carriers launching attack craft like a shaken beehive spitting a swarm. Using two laser turrets, the player defends his ship in a 3d and 360 degree battle. Each level takes about ten minutes to complete. Between each level the player collects resources used to upgrade his weapons, targeting, shields, repair robots, etc. The player must survive six worlds of nihilistic action to complete the mission.
The graphics are just great; sharp and vivid with very pretty explosions. The enemy ships look menacing and move smoothly and quickly. The lasers beams are bright, clean and “accurate”.

The rock-pop-heavy metal soundtrack is of mixed quality at best and is terribly annoying at worst. But at least the player can mute that if they choose. The story, such as it is, is advanced through the conversation between the pilot and the ships AI. It is here the game really breaks down, as the voice acting is just terrible, sounding like a low grade 1980’s voice synthesizer from a techno-band poetry reading.
The creativity and innovation in “Alien Domination” is very low. “Tail Gunner” did this same thing in 1979 in an old styled video arcade game, as did “Space Harrier” in 1985 and “Sin and Punishment” did again in 2000. The developer has clearly spent most of its time and energy on the excellent graphics. So even within the narrow range of a 3d space “rail” shooter, “Alien Domination” doesn’t show the player anything new in either storyline or game play.
If you want a simple, mindless yet pretty space shooter that lets you dispatch alien hordes for hours and for a reasonable price of around 10 to 12 dollars American, then “Alien Domination” is certainly for you. If you want something more from your gaming experience, then look elsewhere.

Crazy Boat is a sub par arcade style boat racing game which seems to make little to no effort to distinguish itself from the hundreds of similar games released before it.
