I was disappointed. I was disappointed that the 60 minute trial period ran out so fast! “Mortimer Beckett and the Lost King” is not your everyday hidden objects game. First, unlike the first two Mortimer Beckett games, this one was based in a world of pure fantasy, peaking new interests.

Second, the producers were very creative and were able to take a boring concept and make it very interesting and fun, by mixing up all kinds of other gaming elements. For example; many favors must be performed for different characters in order to collect information or objects needed to progress in the game. I found that there is also quite a variety of puzzles and miniature games you must take part in, making it not only a game, but also a form of memory and logic training.

You’re guided through many different areas in the game and there are never too many items in one place, so you don’t sit there peering at the screen for half an hour because you cannot find one item. Instead, there is constant change offered by the many different rooms and areas to visit.

Each chapter offers not only a jewel to collect but also a totally new and different area to explore, which is divided up into several scenes which you must investigate in order to figure out how to leave and progress.

The graphics were just brilliant. The colors used were bright, bold and inviting, and in no way, tiring to look at. Game-play was simple, with easy navigation, and everything can be done with just a few buttons. The tutorial offered is short and to the point so the player is quickly able to dive right into the game with a full understanding of how it all works.

After all your hard work in one area, you’re given a short break in which you may remove your thinking hats and enjoy what is in my opinion, the best feature in the game, the cut scenes. They’re fully animated, accompanied by pleasant voice-acting and delightful cinematic music and provide you with a sense of progression.

So those are all the reasons why you should buy the game, but I must admit, it does have one or two downfalls. After doing my research, I found out that it is a rather short game. Although the premium edition is rather expensive, this doesn’t really pose as a problem since you can wait for the regular edition. Players now have unlimited hints which allows them to storm their way through the game without taking the time to appreciate the intrinsic graphics and plot.

Overall, I would rate this game a 4/5 because although it appeals to a child audience, it was very enjoyable for me too, as it kept me intrigued with its cozy graphics and unpredictable journey. My only problem is the price tag it comes with but I am definitely considering buying the full version.

Full Game Review

It’s the greatest city in the world, a perfect setting for a video game. Big City Adventure: New York City has a title that infers an exciting video game experience. And yet, despite the name as flashy as the lights in the city itself, Big City Adventure: New York City is just another hidden object game.

GAME PLAY

Big City Adventure: New York City tries to have a story line, but it is forced and unnecessary. Players choose from any of six characters, covering the immediate family and grandparents. These characters have no names, beyond the likes of, “Brother,” and no purpose once the game begins.

The game breaks itself into different Big Apple locations, each of which is a picture filled with images that are hidden and need to be found. Big City Adventure: New York City differentiates itself by having plenty of objects hidden within the picture, not all of which need to be found. Just because there is a monkey on a taxi-cab, doesn’t mean that you need to click on it. Also, these New York City landscapes symbolize the circus that is the Big City, and some of these otherwise strange views are actually the norm. The way these images are cluttered make the game more like a “Where’s Waldo” seek-and-find game than many of the hidden object games that are already cluttering up the web.

GRAPHICS

The few images outside of the various scenes are very basic in design and color scheme. The scenes themselves are much more detailed by necessity, but not so much as to distinguish itself amongst the glut of hidden object games.

AUDIO

The music of Big City Adventure: New York City is about as generic as it gets. The sound effects that mostly only accompany object clicks, are also nothing new. This game can be played with the sound off.

OVERALL

Big City Adventure: New York City has one minor distinction, but is, for the most part, just extension of all the similar games that are already available for download. It is faultless, but uninspired.

Tired of every seek-and-find puzzle game being the same? NightShift Legacy: The Jaguar’s Eye might provide a short spurt of relief! It is hard to come up with a lot of variations on such a tired genre but with the inclusion of different and outside the box puzzles between seek-and-find rounds, your eyes will get a break while your brain picks up the slack.

In story mode, search for objects and piece together the clues provided to help Mike and Isabel solving the mystery of the Jaguar’s Eye and Isabel’s secret past, with logic codex puzzles, picture puzzles, word puzzles and more. Alternatively, you can strictly stick to seek-and-find in arcade mode with timed rounds.

To read through the story portion of the game you are forced to click through comic book-like storyboards with graphics straight out of the 90s. The story will send you to different locations for the seek-and-find, starting out in the jungle and progressing to a barn, library, etc. One round requires you to scroll through a codex of symbols to find the objects listed, which is certainly different than staring at a static screen.

The seek-and-find puzzles themselves are not as hard as similar games. You are given 30 minutes to complete one area, making use of three hints as needed. If you have a sharp eye you can probably finish an area in under ten minutes. If you are looking for a challenging seek-and-find game, this one may not be for you at first, but probably gets harder as the game progresses. Again, the brain testing part of the game comes when it is puzzle time.

Graphics in Jaguar’s Eye are average for this genre. The transitions are smooth and the computer doesn’t get clogged up with too much animation. In fact, the only animation in this game comes with clicking on an object and using the hint function. Otherwise you have to read through static storyboards, but you can click through them if you just want to get straight down to business.

The only audio in this game is the background music and a few sound effects. No vocal or animal sounds, which can make the story a bit trying. The background music is mysterious and soothing at the same time, helping you focus on the task at hand. Again, use of sound effects are reserved for hints and picking up objects.

While certainly not innovative by any means, as mystery seek-and-find games go, the creative twist provided by the different puzzles sets this game apart. It isn’t the use of puzzles that is different, but rather the type of puzzle. For $19.99 you can buy the full version and have access to 20+ search locations and “six chapters of romance and intrigue,” although I don’t recall any romance during the 30-minute trial. Unless you are a seek-and-find aficionado, save your money.

Mystery PI New York is a new twist on an old favorite. Mystery P.I. is an “I spy” style game where you play as a New York City sleuth working to locate lost items to fulfill a will. After playing the limited demo of the game I rated it a 5/5 based on five sections.

Game Play:
Mystery P.I. features a simple point and click style interface. Game play is mediated completely by the mouse. This means that gamers can look forward to a very easy and intuitive style of play. The screen is divided between a list of things to find and a large static image that contains the items. Players simply scan the screen to locate the items. While it may not sound difficult some of the levels with have even the most seasoned gamer scratching their head and frantically searching.

Sound:
The soundtrack to Mystery P.I. is very low key and groove oriented. The sound effects are subtle and well done. Each level features the same music, and so it can get a little repetitive after a while. This is a minor flaw in the game, especially when compared to all of the other rich aspects of Mystery P.I.

Creativity:
The creative department must have had their hands full with this game! To put it simply, Mystery P.I. is visually stunning! The levels are gorgeously illustrated and look painstakingly constructed. The side bar menu is a nice creative touch and all of the color elements work together extremely well. There is never a time during game play when you feel distracted by other aspects in the game. The colors used are vivid and striking and all of the animation is simple yet crisp. The amount creativity that was put into developing Mystery P.I. more than makes up for the lackluster sound track.

Innovation:
The “I spy”/puzzle combo is unlike any other game that I’ve personally played. This game borrows the best from both and melds them together in a unique and exciting way. Mystery P.I. combines the items found in the “I spy” portions of the game into a final puzzle at the end of each section. The point and click interface is pretty basic, but this falls by the wayside when compared to the other unique aspects of the game. The added back story to the game adds a new dimension to the old style “I spy” theme that keeps the game interesting and gives the player a sense of accomplishment every time they complete a level.

Fun Factor/Addictiveness:
Mystery P.I.- The New York Fortune is an extremely fun and engaging game that you’ll be hard pressed to stop playing. The puzzles offer just the right amount of challenge, just enough to make you sweat but not enough to leave you feeling frustrated. The back story also adds an additional layer to the puzzle experience by giving you an end goal that sucks you in and leaves you begging for more.

Summary:
Overall Mystery P.I.- The New York Fortune is a gorgeous game with rich visuals, simple playability and an enticing back story. Short of the repetitive sound track, this game is flawless from beginning to end. The free demo version is just the beginning, with even more features available in the full version of the game. Mystery P.I. should set a new standard by which all other puzzlers to come should be judged.

In this sequel to “Escape From the Museum” by Gogii Games, the player follows along with the adventures of Susan Anderson as she travels across the world gathering valuable archaeological items for her museum. Clues to finding these special relics are provided inside a mysterious notebook sent to her from a secretive associate. As you complete each scene, clues to the greater mystery are slowly revealed.

The Search for Lost Treasure is a hidden object game with some good potential. Each level you are presented with a well-crafted scene such as a museum library, the Empire State building’s lobby, or a darkened harbor. Along with this scene, you are given a list of objects to find. The graphics are beautifully depicted and most of the hidden objects are cleverly disguised without being impossible to find.

A nice, innovative feature is the ability to use some of the tools you uncover. These items may become part of your permanent inventory which you can take from scene to scene. For instance, there is a hammer for smashing objects open to reveal other clues and a brush for removing dust from areas that may hide treasures. This provides a welcome diversion from pouring over scenes for the expertly hidden objects and gives incentive to revisit old scenes.

The items you uncover may also be used to solve puzzles which are part of the current scene or even usable on a previous scene. This often requires following up with clues inside the mysterious journal or using a bit of logic to place the items in the correct spot or order. These extra puzzles and usable inventory items add a nice creative twist to what could be an otherwise typical hidden object game.

There are however a few low points. While the music and voice-overs are adequate, the intro and cut-scenes are simply static rendered drawings with poorly rendered text in speech bubbles. The view simply zooms in and out of a static picture as the individual text bubbles appear next to a character’s face. It has the appearance of last minute patchwork and detracts from the overall quality of the game.

Further, the total playtime the game offers might be an issue. If you are a “Where’s Waldo” whiz, you can probably breeze through the first series of five scenes in a little under an hour. With only about 30 total scenes, it could be a quickly shelved game. The creators try to address this by providing some re-playability. The first time you return to a scene, extra items are added to your list. Unfortunately, these same items were in the same locations when you first visited and you probably ran across many of them while rigorously scouring the place.

Overall, the somewhat generically named “Adventure Chronicles: The Search for Lost Treasure” sits at an equally generic 3 of 5. While there is a touch of innovative gameplay with the usable tools and puzzles which tie multiple scenes together, it’s just not enough. The game needs some polish on its static introduction and cut-scenes to give it a more professional feel. It could also benefit from a greater number of scenes. At the very least, the scenes need to be re-rendered for return trips so you aren’t presented a list of items you’ve already stumbled upon.

Story

For this hidden object adventure, players team up with the dashing John Swift and svelte Jane Graham as they pursue the traitor Seth Hisster. To defeat Seth (and so John Swift can reclaim the ten bucks that Hisster owes him), the duo must find all artifacts for the Court of Osiris.

Game Play

Rather than featuring one hidden object adventure after another, Luxor Adventures antes up the level of play with basic hidden object exploits, marble-poppers, comparison games, jigsaw puzzles and card games. The hidden object and matching games are timed, but players are typically given at least 25 minutes, so there is plenty of time to scan the object-rich environment. A hint feature refreshes every minute or so to help players find difficult items.

Just as players tire from finding Egyptian columns or Mona Lisa’s bracelet, Mumbo Jumbo throws in an amusing game of marble-poppers. Game play moves at a steady pace, and the game even pauses if you switch to another application. However, the game is rather sensitive, and players must click on items numerous times for the game to recognize the find.

Graphics

The basic graphic interface is the biggest drawback for Luxor Adventures. Players may need to adjust their monitor brightness setting for some adventures, such as finding puzzle pieces in a spider-webbed filled entryway. The dimly lit graphics in various levels require a higher level of concentration for locating well-hidden objects.

Sound

The soothing music in Luxor Adventures creates a relaxing atmosphere for puzzle solving. As the game travels through Egypt and then Italy, the music alters with the environment. As players find items in Leonard da Vinci’s studio, a clock tower chimes in the distance, creating a fun urgency to find objects more quickly. As players complete levels, a harp plays cheerfully to signify your success.

Creativity and Innovation

Luxor Adventures offers an original approach to gaming with a contemporary package of hidden objects, matching, puzzles, and even card games. This is the perfect game for exercising your brain while having fun mastering level after level in pursuit of the evil Seth Hisster. The hour trial expires too quickly, but purchasing the full product delivers many hours of enjoyment.

Story

The story begins in the present, when a young woman visits a museum and is told an ancient tale of young princess, Annabel, whom she resembles. The young princess had a lover named, Akhenaten who was sacrificed to the gods so that the evil high priest could marry the princess and become the Pharaoh, ruling over all Egypt. The young woman is magically transported back in time to try to undo the damage of the high priest and save princess Annabel. She must escape a pyramid, sail down the Nile and finally put a stop the plans the evil high priest.

Game Play

This not your typical hidden object game. Objects are spread throughout various locations for players to find and complete tasks with. There are also parts of the game in which it is necessary to talk to the other characters to see what they want. There are also several types of puzzles to complete. The game is fast paced and game play is smooth and effortless.

Graphics

The 3D graphics in Annabel are very well created. The environments from the Egyptian palace to the ship at sail on the Nile are pretty hard to beat. My only fault with this part of the game is that players may become dizzy from the quick movements. From looking around the room to moving up and down stairs. Overall the graphics are impressive, with very high resolution and special effects.

Sound

Annabel has a very good sound track that uses Egyptian rhythms. This adds to the overall flow of the game. The music is definitely instrumental in making it seem like ancient Egypt. One problem I found with the sound was that the voice-overs for the characters were stiff and didn’t seem to add to the story. Only the lead character of Annabel had a realistic voice. Also the lip-synching did not correspond with the graphics.

Creativity and Innovation

Annabel is a very innovative game. The 3D graphics were impressive and the overall change from the typical hidden object game was very refreshing. There were a few flaws with the voice-overs and cheesy comments from the characters, but overall it really worked. The game was fun to play and I would definitely add it to my wish list.
