Unmechanical? That’s the nice way to describe our father. It’s also the name of a puzzle adventure PC and iOS video game coming from Indie developers Talawa Games and Teotl Studios. PC Games will be able to play Unmechanical on August 8th. iOS gamers will be able to play the game a few weeks later. Unmechanical’s game trailer’s visuals remind us a bit of the indie game Machinariun from Amanita Design. (more…)
UK based independent Game Developer Fat Pebble announced plans to partner with Zynga to launch Clay Jam, a family friendly puzzle game on the iOS and Android platforms. Fat Pebble chose to make Clay Ham completely out of modeling clay. Do you know how much work that represents? Clearly they have invested a lot of love and labor in this game. Fat Pebble won’t reveal the launch date yet. You can keep track of Clay Jam’s progress at Fat Pebble’s site:
Here’s Fat Pebble’s description of Clay Jam:
“Clay Jam is a family-friendly action game set in a world made entirely of modelling clay. The once-beautiful land of Wobble Bottom has been ravaged by the fearsome Bully Beasts. The Clay Hills have been sucked dry and the Squashy Monsters all enslaved. This world needs a hero – someone strong, someone stony, someone who can roll…
Behold! Fat Pebble – the first ever pebble superhero (*)!
Use your finger to gouge grooves in the ground and guide Fat Pebble down five fantastical hills. Squash as many monsters as you can while avoiding anything that’s larger than you. As you squash things, you grow – Katamari-style – making you go faster and letting you crush bigger and bigger things.
At the bottom of each hill lurks a unique, terrible Bully Beast. By growing as big as you can and building up your speed, you’ll knock the Beast flying – the further you can fling the demon, the closer to freedom you’ll take Wobble Bottom and all its inhabitants.”

He knows he’s superior to you and possesses no patience with any humans.
This can happen to your phone when you buy Self Aware, an iOS puzzle game from Oregon based indie game developer Dingle for $0.99. The game Self Aware features “Stu” the main character who happens to be a renegade security software app that takes over your phone and presents you mini games and puzzles to solve so you can “recapture” control of your phone.
The puzzles leverage elements on your phone like your contact list where you have to guess which person in your contact list was inserted by “Stu”. Another mini game forces you to fly a plane around obstacles like Captain “Sully” Sullenberger. We haven’t seen a game this creative in a while.
Here’s the game description from Dingle:
Self Aware is a wildly original puzzle adventure that pits players against their own mobile devices as they match wits with a renegade security program named STU in a battle to free their phones from this omnipotent technological menace! Equal parts mini-game escapism, puzzle challenge, and mind-bending interactive entertainment experience, Self Aware is currently available for download on the App Store for $0.99 in the Games category.
The Security enhanced Turing-complete Universal program – or STU for short – is the most sophisticated mobile security application in the world, smart enough to keep you safe from any and all digital dangers. There’s just one problem. A freak code mutation occurred, STUs’ become self aware, and he’s taken your mobile device hostage! Now, with the help of a dedicated Dingle Techie customer support rep its up to you to outsmart this malevolent app and take back your mobile device. Best yet, this game features everything from logic puzzles and reflex testing arcade games, to virtual scavenger hunts and classic word based riddles to do just that!
Self Aware isn’t set up with traditional levels. Players start out on a mostly barren red hued screen that looks eerily similar to their normal iOS device’s home screen. The only difference is that when you click on an icon gamers are greeted with the smarmy STU and challenged to solve a riddle or complete a mini game. Every win unlocks either new icons and parts of STU’s operating system, bringing players one step closer to taking back their mobile devices! Tired of endless spins on the same basic games on your iPhone? Get self Aware and get into some action that’s as much meta-game as it is, well, game!

We came across a fantastic puzzle game for the iOS platform called Connectrode created by Deep Plaid Games who say Tetris, Drop7, Dr. Mario, and Bejeweled games all influenced the game design. Many many game developers and publishers uses the adjective “addictive” to describe their work. Rarely does it apply. In the case of Connectrode we use words hypnotically addictive to describe this great puzzle game. (more…)
