Game Play

You are the professional driver and you choose the car and the color you want. There are options for different styles of games such as a quick race. You also have the opportunity to choose the kind of track you want such as Corsa Valley before you start.

Using the arrows on your keyboard you manipulate the car. Your view point of the car can be changed. The tracks weren’t easy and having so many controls made it difficult to manipulate the car in a fast race. The keys were very touch sensitive to the direction you were going in that requires a lot of skill that less experienced game players may find frustrating. As soon as you have completed races you earn credits which allow you to upgrade your car or repair it.

Graphics

The 3D graphics are breathtakingly realistic. It is just like you are on a racing track in a real car. By choosing to view just the front of the car, rather than the whole car, you are immediately given the illusion that you are really driving a car.

Sound

There is background music when choosing options although you can change the level of sound. Once the race has started the sound effects are realistic so that you hear the repetitive purr of the engine once driving. The breaks squeal if you press them quickly. After a while the sound effects became annoying.

Creativity and Innovation

This creative game offers more than just a driving game that you might find in an arcade. You are given the opportunity to imagine you are a professional driver who needs to race to improve your ranking and career path. It offers the challenge to upgrade your skills and reach new levels. Having so many choices such as cars and tracks is innovative as players who enjoy racing games will not easily become bored.

The game is value for money for racing car lovers everywhere as it provides different kinds of racing experiences when playing. It isn’t one I would consider buying as I prefer empire building games.

SpringWorld Challenge isn’t what I’d call this game. I think I’d rename it to something along the lines of ‘A Cautionary Tale for Drivers.’ Doesn’t click? Oh well.

SpringWorld Challenge is straightforward. You have a vehicle. This vehicle, either a car or a rocket, must reach a goal. This goal is typically located across an expanse of two-dimensional, twisting terrain filled with rotating platforms, crushes presses and circling hills. Bypass these perils, reach a green circle within a set period of time, and you’re golden. Depending on your speed you’ll receive trophies for your efforts, with extra kudos if you get to the end without much damage.

That’s it. There’s not much else to say about SpringWorld Challenge. Except, that is, for the glorious, glorious crashes.

Destruction is the real reason most will play this game. It’s endowed with a unique set of physics that, at least for the cars, makes for a hilarious time. As with any good racing game your car comes equipped with rocket boosters than not only speed your car up, but keep it rooted to the ground (these are located on the hood and top of the trunk). It’s extremely easy to become airborne, and because your car is fragile one good crash is enough to wreck it beyond repair.
And that’s where the fun comes in, because you’re invariably left with a pair of wheels and one mad thruster that you can still partially control. No more driver in this car; it’s a phantom wreck that will struggle along valiantly – mainly because you’ll make it struggle, giggling insidiously as you jab at the accelerator – until it realizes that, in its mangled state, there’s no way to reach the goal. Then you’ll start all over again.

I would’ve been happy with an entire game of just car mayhem. Unfortunately, the folks at Nyblom Software saw decided to include the tedious rocket stages. Your ship’s thrusters are much more frustrating than they are hilarious, and the wrecks are never as satisfying mainly because they aren’t high velocity, uncontrolled impacts so much as a series of annoying bumps. Especially aggravating are maze stages that stick your ship inside a minute labyrinth.

There’s not much to be said about SpringWorld’s visuals. It looks, in fact, as though most of the game was done in MS Paint. The music isn’t much better, with only a handful of generic tracks though I’ll admit that, again, I far prefer the peppy numbers found in the car levels. It’s as if the programmer knew exactly where to focus the game’s strong points.

Don’t get me wrong. SpringWorld Challenge is fun. It’s a good time waster and even makes allowance for your more insane crashes, as you can record your runs and post them online for others to watch. I think, however, that the rocket should’ve been expunged in favor of more polish on the car stages. Nicer visuals and longer tracks would make SpringWorld into a classic.

As it is, SpringWorld strikes me as a glorified tech demo. I can’t recommend buying it. That said, if a car-only game ever comes along with the same physics I’ll gleefully grab a copy. 3/5

Mad Skills Motocross is, in retrospect, as silly as its name implies. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a real, CHALLENGING race game under the facade, but for the most part this is a title designed to get you laughing. You’re given a racer and tossed onto a dirt bike, pitted against either another racer or a set of criteria. Each race is different in this fashion, and thanks to the game’s editor you can make as many of these levels as you want.

Mad Skills Motocross is all side-scrolling. There isn’t the slightest hint of three dimensions in the game beyond a cartoony background, and even that won’t be enough to trick your eye. Honestly, though, the basic visuals don’t detract from the game at all, as you know exactly what you’re looking at: a guy on a bike. A fairly unstable bike, at that, one that’s probably going to flip over at any moment, and does thanks to the game’s crazy ragdoll physics engine.

It’s this engine that makes the game fun. Your bike is constantly threatening to tip over and cream your guy (especially with all the bumps in the road), and using the arrow keys you need to make sure your bike doesn’t travel too far over each jump and smear your rider’s face with dirt. He WILL go off, however, and therein lies the hilarity, as he’ll fly in all directions and land with some horrible crunching noises as accompaniment. The ragdoll physics will ensure he lands as painfully as possible, to boot, which is great given that he’ll just get up seconds later and keep on riding.

There’s other stuff beyond the sheer racing with the arrow keys, of course (which I must say I appreciate – you CAN, if you wish, play this game with one hand alone). You also get several gadgets attached to your bike to give it more spring, like, say, little explosive boosts that propel it upwards. Generally speaking, though, this game is only going to appeal to a) those who like to race dirt bikes or b) those who enjoy fictional pain.

I’m not sure how much lasting appeal Mad Skills Motorcross holds, but I happily played with it for an hour without getting bored. The price is a bit steep, but fans of good old fashioned bone-crushing fun will probably get a kick out of this one. Don’t expect a great deal of innovation over old formulas, however, as Mad Skills Motorcross simply refines ragdoll physics to new heights of hilarity.

You should buy this game if:
- You like racing
- You like horrible crashes
- You laugh at pained grunts

You should not buy this game if:
- You’re looking for depth
- You’re looking for plot
- You’re looking for a long-lasting, immersive experience

Graphics

The New Star Grand Prix is not a 3D graphics game at all. This game is entirely a 2-dimensional (2D) graphics game. The gaming view for the New Star Grand Prix is only a basic 2-dimensional top down’ view. Nonetheless, the 2D graphics are impressively well thought out. Water vapor & rain drops effects during rain, the smoke effects for car damages & etc makes the New Star Grand Prix game better looking than many 2D top down’ view racing games of the past, including Grand Theft Auto (1997). Hence, a point is given for attention to detail in the 2D graphics.

Game Play

Starting in New Game’ mode will offer a player the choice of playing on rated teams. The best Formula 1 teams in this game have their own advantages in terms of handling, acceleration, & speed over the other low rated teams. Choosing to race for top teams like McFaren & Farrari will provide the player a distinct advantage over the competition. Yes, the spelling of the team names is different but their names are all too familiar, nonetheless.

In the Options menu, a player can choose to switch on or off the Pit Radio, Map, Fuel, Damage, Tyre Wear which will affect the game play. Damage’ being on will see the player’s car start to spew out black smoke after a few collisions with boundary walls & accidents with other cars. Despite it, any amount of damage can be easily fixed after going into the pit stop. This realism aspect of the game gives it another point.

Innovation & Creativity

In between the races, the player will be prompted to respond or be contacted by the Boss, Pit Crew, Fans, & Friends. Head over to the casino with them & make them happy. The Casino offers Blackjack, Roulette, & Fruit Machine for the player to burn the winnings or increase it. This is a unique feature of the game & provides an engaging experience for the player. Additionally, a player can choose to purchase luxury cars & property with enough finances.

The car handling is innovative too. Note that when it rains, racing will prove to be more difficult as the track becomes slippery & greater control over the car is required. Another innovative feature is the practice mode. New Star Grand Prix provides a ghost car that shows the optimal path for the player to refer to on the race track.

A creative choice for the player in this game is to click on the Editor’ at the initial user interface screen. This selection allows players to load tracks & maps, edit, create new tracks, & save them. Uniqueness & creativity factors in this game add another point.

Sound

Sound effects are good, similar to other racing games like MotoGP & Formula 1. The revving of the powerful F1 engines at the starting line, the metallic Thud’ when the car hits something, the sound of a thousand rain drops when it rains: all these sounds combined with the catchy electronic pop music by Dynamedion contributes to an overall fun gaming experience for the player.

Conclusion

The $9.99 price is reasonable for this sort of game & one’s purchase will be worth it. Windows & Mac versions of the New Star Grand Prix are available. Racing Formula One cars are fun in New Star Grand Prix even though it is without the encapsulating realism of high end 3D racing games. This game will provide bursts of 2D top down’ racing fun when required as soon as one clicks to start the game. Final rating is given a well deserved 3/5.
