The premise of the game is to begin with a Yard Sale in Malibu and work your way through all of the various stops and cities along the way until your arrival in Hollywood.

The way the yard sale is conducted is that several yard sale items are placed in a yard scene that makes the items disappear into the background and less visible to the eye.

At the same time a shopper will pop up in the corner. The player then must match the shopper’s request with the correct item. If an incorrect item is chosen it will simply fall to the bottom of the scene.
The player is racing the clock to see how much money can be raised before the time runs out. If all the items are sold before the time is up, the player earns bonus bucks.

As the player increases in levels the number of items to find becomes more complex. There are boards with small jewelry items that the player will need to zoom in on in order to see the items for sale. This is done by holding the left click.

The graphics are fairly simple, but it fits the complexity of the game. The graphics are used primarily to disguise items. Some items can be difficult to determine what exactly they are at a quick glance. For example see-saw comes up. Instead of expecting an actual teeter totter it is a statue with people on a see saw. This is just part of the disguise. The item pictures aren’t always what you immediately think of with the item.

Sound is also very simple, but if it had much more to it, it would probably be a distraction. When a bonus is granted a sound is given. Otherwise the music is low key with very few other sounds.
The game probably isn’t the most creative or original, but it was enjoyable in a small dose. It was fun to see how much money could be earned and it did motivate the player to want to continue around the track of sales.

This game is not for those that are looking for adventure and action. It is a good memory game that would be good for kids. Because it is very good at reinforcing memory skills with no violence or sexual content. This would be an excellent game for kids. It would appear to be suited for children age 8 and up. The shopping aspect of the game may make it more appealing to girls as well.

The instructions and tutorials make the game extremely easy to jump into and learn how to play. This is one of the strengths of the program.

Overall it is a good family game that is good for memory and matching skills. For this reason I would rate it 3/5. I lowered it for simplicity and lack of a real original concept.

Fashion Apprentice is a seek-and-find game, where the player must click a variety of objects scattered and hidden in a cluttered environment. Not to my taste, but I’ll give the game its due; it goes out of its way to provide a variety of challenges to the player. The list of objects to find is sometimes presented as names, sometimes as silhouettes, and sometimes as a broad category, eg. search the kitchen for ‘food’. There are obstacles such as doors that must be opened or carts that must be moved to find certain objects, distracting fans and lights, spotlight levels, and mini-games like spot-the-difference levels and rhythm games where objects must be touched in the correct order and with the correct timing. You can also pick up secret items such as candy, which refills your hint bar faster. As seek-and-finds go it’s quite well designed.

The plot of the game follows a girl as she rises in the competitive world of high fashion. Each level is an assignment which advances the plot. Between levels, you can spend your earned ‘glamour points’ on designer dresses, hats, handbags, jewellery, and cellphones, then dress your character up like a paper doll; ‘better’ outfits fill up a ‘glamour meter’ which can give you scoring bonuses. In fact, this entire game seems designed to be a ‘girl game’, to appeal to some market-research derived ‘female’ demographic or game company executive’s preconception of what a woman gamer would be interested in; and frankly I find that a bit offensive and annoyingly sexist. Don’t get me wrong; I wouldn’t mind playing a fashion-designer game, if it had something to do with actual fashion design. Dressing a glorified seek-and-find up in a bunch of lame glitz and drawing floral curlicues all over the loading screen is not going to attract girl gamers. And while we’re on the subject, I also find it offensive that the major object of the game is to accumulate material crap; not to mention the implicit idea that being more expensive makes something objectively ‘better’.

The graphics are another major problem with this game. They’re drawn in a stylized art-deco gloss which makes objects difficult to distinguish from each other The colours are bright, solid pastels, predominantly pinks and oranges, which clash violently and make the screens actively difficult to look at. Giving your players a headache is not a good thing for any game, especially one where they’re expected to stare at a static screen for extended periods searching for hidden objects. The soundtrack is a kind of bland, repetitive muzak, probably meant to be characteristic of runway fashion shows, which only adds to the annoyance factor. Bottom line, this game could have earned itself a 4 by sticking to being a good seek-and-find instead of layering on a bunch of marketing-based hoohaw. What girl gamers want is good games. I would not spend my money on a game like this even if it was a genre I enjoyed playing.

The Search for Lost Treasure is a hidden object game with some good potential. Each level you are presented with a well-crafted scene such as a museum library, the Empire State building’s lobby, or a darkened harbor. Along with this scene, you are given a list of objects to find. The graphics are beautifully depicted and most of the hidden objects are cleverly disguised without being impossible to find.

A nice, innovative feature is the ability to use some of the tools you uncover. These items may become part of your permanent inventory which you can take from scene to scene. For instance, there is a hammer for smashing objects open to reveal other clues and a brush for removing dust from areas that may hide treasures. This provides a welcome diversion from pouring over scenes for the expertly hidden objects and gives incentive to revisit old scenes.

The items you uncover may also be used to solve puzzles which are part of the current scene or even usable on a previous scene. This often requires following up with clues inside the mysterious journal or using a bit of logic to place the items in the correct spot or order. These extra puzzles and usable inventory items add a nice creative twist to what could be an otherwise typical hidden object game.

There are however a few low points. While the music and voice-overs are adequate, the intro and cut-scenes are simply static rendered drawings with poorly rendered text in speech bubbles. The view simply zooms in and out of a static picture as the individual text bubbles appear next to a character’s face. It has the appearance of last minute patchwork and detracts from the overall quality of the game.

Further, the total playtime the game offers might be an issue. If you are a “Where’s Waldo” whiz, you can probably breeze through the first series of five scenes in a little under an hour. With only about 30 total scenes, it could be a quickly shelved game. The creators try to address this by providing some re-playability. The first time you return to a scene, extra items are added to your list. Unfortunately, these same items were in the same locations when you first visited and you probably ran across many of them while rigorously scouring the place.

Overall, the somewhat generically named “Adventure Chronicles: The Search for Lost Treasure” sits at an equally generic 3 of 5. While there is a touch of innovative gameplay with the usable tools and puzzles which tie multiple scenes together, it’s just not enough. The game needs some polish on its static introduction and cut-scenes to give it a more professional feel. It could also benefit from a greater number of scenes. At the very least, the scenes need to be re-rendered for return trips so you aren’t presented a list of items you’ve already stumbled upon.

As in previous Samantha Swift games you have your scanner and various tools to help you find the missing items in each of the rooms. You are given a list of items to find, most are visible in the room but some items, those highlighted in blue, are hidden – To find these you must use a tool to uncover it such as using a broom to sweep away dust or an axe to cut down trees. Along the way you will also have to solve mini puzzles including putting together missing pieces of a mural and making a raft.

Help is at hand along the way in the form of a hints button which resembles a lightning bolt. There’s no need to rush though, this game doesn’t have a time limit unlike some hidden object games.

Story

Game play

The premise is simple, but as with all point and click mystery games you will soon be scratching your head to find the right combination of items to let you advance. At times this game can really immerse you well and leave you desperate to just advance the scene to uncover more of the plot.

At other points however, you’ll be squinting at the screen, hunting for that one out of place pixel, or grinding your teeth as you attempt to combine every item in your inventory in order to progress.

A character switching system is used, introducing a fresh experience on what can sometimes be a stale gaming model. Being a ghost Joey can pass through obstacles but has a limited capacity for interaction. Unless he is talking to someone (or trying to blow a small item across the floor!) then you need Rosa to work on the physical elements of the puzzles.

Graphics

The graphics are fairly outdated and lacklustre. The overall resolution is low and so the scenes and characters lack detail. Being a point and click game it’s not a crippling issue however, as you’re really there for the story and puzzles instead of bi-linear filtered explosions.

Sound

The soundtrack is appropriately haunting and helps to immerse your mind in the plot. It’s something you could happily listen to on or off the game, well produced and musically intelligent. The speech is well recorded (barring a few plosive issues and wave clips) and the voice acting is good.

Creativity And Innovation

The system of swapping between two characters to accomplish different aspects of a task isn’t a new one but it’s still refreshing to see it used in a point and click game. The plot involvement in the paranormal offers a good alternative to pure fantasy games or comedy point and clicks. The plot is more than intriguing enough for me to recommend the game to others.
